This is the foundation of everything we do in The Lab. We are moving away from the archaic model of “running plays” and toward the elite development of “autonomous decision-makers.”
Our goal is not to produce robots who follow orders, but to cultivate Architects who can design solutions in real-time. We believe that creativity is the daughter of mastery. You cannot paint a masterpiece if you do not know how to hold the brush (Technique) or mix the colors (Insight).
To achieve the “Goldilocks Solution”—too technical for Rec, too individual-focused for Mega-Clubs—we adhere to these four pillars of delivery:
We embrace the philosophy that Automated Technique leads to Cognitive Freedom.
The Principle: A player cannot solve a complex tactical problem (Space/Time) if their brain is cluttered with the mechanics of controlling the ball.
The Lab Application: We demand massive repetition of “The Feet” (Coerver) to push ball mastery into the subconscious.
The Result: Once the feet are automatic, the eyes are free to become “The Owl.” We drill the definitions so the player can write the poetry.
Soccer is not a turn-based game; it is fluid. Therefore, we never train in isolation. Every session must reflect the Continuous Cycle:
Attack: Expanding “The Diamond” (Geometry).
Transition (Loss): The 5-Second Rule (Immediate reaction).
Defense: Compressing space.
Transition (Win): Expanding immediately.
The Ethos: We do not stop drills when the ball goes out; we stop them when the mentality drops. If a player loses the ball and becomes a “Hider,” the session pauses. We demand “The Hunter” mentality in the micro-moments between possession.
We are Educators, not puppeteers.
The Problem: “Joystick Coaching” (shouting “Pass left!”, “Shoot!”) robs the player of the Repetition of Decision. It creates dependency.
The Solution: We use Guided Discovery.
The Protocol:
Freeze: Stop the play at the critical moment of failure or success.
Ask: “What did you see before you received the ball?” “Where was the space in the Diamond?”
Listen: Allow the player to verbalize their thought process (Insight).
Replay: Let them solve the problem again with the new data.
We respect the TIPS model by maximizing “Ball Rolling Time.”
The Standard: No lines, no laps, no lectures.
The Environment: Small spaces require faster feet and faster minds. We shrink the field to artificial levels of pressure to forge resilience.
The Outcome: By training in a “phone booth,” the actual match feels like it is played in slow motion. We overload the brain in The Lab so the game becomes easy.
“I am not here to win a weekend game. I am here to install software.
I will treat the Technique (T) with forensic detail. I will provoke the Insight (I) by asking questions, not giving answers. I will demand Personality (P) by celebrating bravery over safety. I will force Speed (S) of thought by restricting space and time.
I am building the Individual. The Trophy is the Player.”
To create a truly elite academy environment, the language must be consistent from the U8s to the U23s. This “Academy Lexicon” ensures that when a player moves between coaches, the instructions remain clear and the cognitive load is reduced.
Here is an exhaustive list of standardized football terminology categorized by the phase of the game and technical execution.
To ensure this ethos is executed, every session in The Lab should follow this structure:
The Activation (The Feet): High-rep, isolated technical work (Coerver). 1,000 touches before a sweat is broken.
The Chaos (The Heart & Brain): Small-Sided Games (1v1, 2v2, 3v3) with heavy constraints (e.g., “Must scan/Owl before scoring,” “5-Second Rule on turnover”).
The Reflection (The IDP): A brief cool-down where the Educator speaks to players individually about their specific Noticeable Flaw and how they addressed it today.
Coerver focuses on the individual technician. Their philosophy is built on the belief that any system or tactic is only as good as the individual’s ability to execute under pressure.
Ball Mastery & 1v1: The foundation. Developing a “feel” for the ball through high-repetition drills (thousands of touches) and the confidence to beat defenders.
Small Group Play: Moving from the individual to 2v2 and 3v3 scenarios to teach basic combinations like the “Wall Pass” or “Overlap.”
Speed & Finish: Developing both physical speed and “mental speed” (reaction/decision making) specifically in the final third.
The Ajax method, as defined by Cruyff’s 14 Rules, focuses on Space, Time, and Geometry.
TIPS Model: Their evaluation pillar—Technique, Intelligence, Personality, and Speed. Intelligence (positioning) is considered the highest asset.
The 3 Pillars of Ajax Education: 1) Cruyff Quality (Mastery of basics), 2) Style of Play (Dominating through possession/4-3-3), and 3) Unique Skills (Encouraging individual “flair” within the team structure).
Positioning: The famous quote: “Technique is passing the ball with one touch, with the right speed, at the right foot of your teammate.” It’s about the efficiency of the movement, not just the skill itself.
The CFF (notably influenced by the GNK Dinamo Zagreb academy) focuses on functional periodization and the competitive mentality.
Sensitive Phases: Identifying the “Golden Age” of motor learning (ages 6–12) to maximize technical growth before introducing heavy physical loads.
Reading the Game (Cognitive Development): Training sessions are designed to present “football problems” that players must solve, moving away from “robotic” drills toward game-representative scenarios. (Technical-Tactical)
Competitive Intensity: Every drill has a winner and a loser. The goal is to build the “Vatreni” spirit—high work ethic, resilience, and tactical discipline.
The Lab is open, and I appreciate the work you’re putting in. Remember what we’re building: individual problem-solvers, not drill collectors. Hold the standard on the non-negotiables every session — The Owl (scan), The Diamond (support), The Hunter (5-Second Rule).
Coach with guided discovery, not joystick coaching. Keep it calm, clear, and competitive. Identify each player’s Noticeable Flaw, fix it through reps, and make them prove it in small-sided games.
Thank you for protecting the culture and bringing the fire + education. Let’s build the individual today.
